Dispelling the Myths About Animals In Shelters

realreasonsSome people shy away from adopting a cat or dog because they believe if someone gave up the animal…something must be wrong with them. A study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science (New, J.C., 2000) found evidence to the contrary. This study looked at 12 shelters across the US during the course of a year (it’s probably similar in Canada). Over 2,000 people who relinquished a puppy/dog and 1,300 people who had relinquished a kitten/cat were surveyed for this study.

The researcher found that the top 5 reasons why dogs and cats were surrendered to a shelter were:

  1. Moving
  2. Landlord Didn’t Allow Pets
  3. They Had Too Many Animals
  4. Costs of Owning a Dog
  5. Owner Had Personal Problems

While this is not to say that all cats and dogs in shelters are perfect, this study does demonstrate that many of the animals that are surrendered to a shelter are there due to circumstances and not their behavior.
