Recipe: Wheat Free Apple Dog Cookies

wheat free apple dog cookiesHere’s a recipe that uses rice flour, perfect for dogs who have wheat allergies. You can either make rice flour yourself by grinding up rice with a coffee grinder or buy it from a health food store.

Preheat the oven to 350F and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. You will need:

2 cups of rice flour

2 jars of baby food apple sauce (the 4 oz size)

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp honey (optional)

Roughly 1/2c warm water

Mix the flour, apple sauce, baking powder, and honey in a bowl. Slowly add the water while stirring the mixture to produce a stiff dough. You may need to adjust the amount of water as needed.

Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to a 1/2″ thickness. Cut out the dough into fun shapes. Bake until golden brown (around 15 minutes in most ovens).

For added fun, you can make a yogurt flavored icing using plain, unsweetened yogurt and adding a small amount of honey or peanut butter for flavoring. Iced cookies should be stored in the fridge while plain cookies can be stored in an air tight container.
